Tin Terminology

Bead: A concave (interior bead) or convex (exterior bead) area, typically 1/8” wide, spanning the circumference of the tin to enhance its strength and stability.

Body: Refers to a can without a lid; the base of a container.

Cover: The lid or closure of a can.

Curl: A section of tin folded inward to create a safe, rounded edge.

Distortion Printing: A printing technique used for seamless tins, where artwork is intentionally distorted to fit onto flat metal and then adjusted as the tin is formed.

Dome: A type of cover with a flat horizontal surface (top) that smoothly transitions into a vertical skirt.

Drawn Can: Also known as a seamless tin, formed from a single piece of tin drawn to create the container.

End: The bottom area of a tin, which can be attached by seaming or crimping.

Four-Colour Process: A printing method utilizsing cyan, magenta, yellow, and black to produce a wide range of colours.

Full Friction: A closure where a plug-style metal cap fits tightly inside the can.Hem: Similar to a curl, an area of tin folded inward to create a safe, flattened edge.

Interior Seal: A closure option where a pliable ring fits inside the tin, allowing for a slender profile can.

Layout: A two-dimensional drawing depicting the specifications of a tin in its flat state, used for designing artwork.

Lithography: A printing method on flat metal sheets later formed into tin cans.

Lock-Seam: Side walls of the tin attach by hooking onto each other, often used for decorative tins.

Multiple Friction: A closure where a plug fits into a ring, creating multiple sealing surfaces.

PMS: The Pantone Matching System, used for spot colours.

Pre-press: Preparation of artwork before printing.

Radius: The curved area of an off-round tin or cover.

Seamless Tin: A tin made from a single piece of drawn tin.

Single Friction: A closure where a plug-style cap fits into a seamed-on ring, creating one sealing surface.

Slipcover: A closure where the cover's skirt slips over and outside the can body.

Stepped Cover: A slipcover design with a step between the horizontal and vertical surfaces, facilitating stacking.

Varnish: A protective coating applied to the metal, available in gloss, matte, and stipple finishes.

Welded Seam: Side walls attach through heat, forming a tin body.

White Coat: The entire metal surface coated with white before printing.

White Print: Artwork using metallic ink or plain tin, with opaque inks printed over areas of plain tin or metallic ink.
